The Gathering Orchestra is a two-year professional development and fellowship program, under the artistic direction of renowned bassist Rodney Whitaker, former member of the Jazz at the Lincoln Center Orchestra, Director of Jazz Studies at Michigan State University and Carr Center Resident Artist.
The Gathering is composed of 4 seasoned jazz veterans and 14 emerging and highly talented young musicians,(ages 18 – 28). Fellows rehearse and perform with their mentors on standards, large ensemble classics, new music and their own original compositions.
Following the national auditions in early Spring the newest cohort of The Gathering Orchestra will be in residence at The Carr Center from May 8th through 12th under the mentorship of Walter Blanding, a member of the Jazz @ Lincoln Center Orchestra, Vincent Chandler, trombonist and jazz instructor at Wayne State and Timothy Blackmon, trumpet player and jazz instructor at Oakland University and Michigan State University.
The Fellows will complete their first Detroit residency in with TWO FREE PUBLIC PERFORMANCES, on Friday May 12th at 5:30 and 6:30 pm as part of the the Opening Night reception for LOFTY ART, in the Kayrod Gallery at Hannan House, 4750 Woodward Avenue in midtown Detroit.
